You’ve been told to sit up straight your whole life.

At school. By your parents. Maybe even by a previous practitioner. And you’ve tried — genuinely tried — to hold yourself differently. But within minutes, you’re back to where you started. Shoulders forward. Head down. Spine rounded.

So you tell yourself you’re lazy. That you just need more discipline.

Here’s what nobody has told you: your posture isn’t simply a habit. It’s a pattern held by your nervous system. And there’s a significant difference.

Your nervous system is running the show

Your posture is not primarily controlled by willpower. It’s an output of your nervous system.

Every position your body holds — the way your head sits over your shoulders, the curve in your lower back, the tension across your upper back — reflects an ongoing conversation between your brain and your body. When that conversation flows freely, your body tends to hold itself with more ease.

When your nervous system is under sustained load — from stress, from years of desk work, from the accumulated demands of daily life — it can develop what we call protective patterns. Muscles brace. The spine compresses. Shoulders round forward.

This isn’t weakness. This is your nervous system responding to what it has experienced. The challenge is that these patterns can become habitual — and that’s where chiropractic care may have a role to play.

Why willpower alone rarely creates lasting change

Conscious effort can shift your posture for a few minutes. But the moment your attention moves back to your screen or your meeting, the pattern reasserts itself.

This is why posture correction through effort alone so often feels unsustainable. You’re using your conscious mind to try to override something your nervous system is holding at a much deeper level.

At Culture Chiropractic in Hackney, we look at posture not as a cosmetic issue but as information. The way your spine and body hold themselves can tell us a great deal about the patterns your nervous system has developed over time — and that’s where our work begins.

What we see at our Hackney Space

People come to us for many different reasons — tension, fatigue, a general sense that something isn’t quite right. Posture is rarely the primary reason someone books, but it’s often part of the picture.

Our approach is to assess the whole person. During your introduction appointment, we carry out a full postural and nervous system examination — not to judge what we see, but to understand what might be driving it.

From there, we work with your nervous system through specific chiropractic adjustments. The goal is not to push your body into a different shape. It’s to support your nervous system in finding more efficient strategies — ones that require less bracing and tension to maintain.

Some members notice changes in how they carry themselves over the course of their care. Others notice improvements in how they feel day to day. Results vary between individuals, and we always give you an honest picture of what we find and what we think may help.

A note on posture and your overall health

Posture is one piece of a much larger picture. If you’re experiencing significant discomfort, persistent pain, or you’re unsure whether chiropractic care is appropriate for you, we’d always encourage you to speak with your GP as a first step. Chiropractic care works best as part of a broader approach to your health — not as a replacement for medical advice.

Dr Corey and Dr Nadia are both registered Doctors of Chiropractic, regulated by the General Chiropractic Council.

Where to start

If you’re curious about what your posture might be telling you — and whether chiropractic care could support you — your introduction appointment is the right place to begin.

It’s a relaxed 30-minute session. We start with a conversation, carry out a full assessment, and give you an honest, clear picture of what we find. No pressure. No commitment beyond that first visit.

Your body is capable of more than you think. Sometimes it just needs the right conditions to find its way.
